Let’s calculate.

Review the method below for assumptions and conventions.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter wall length, wall height, exposed block width, exposed course height, waste allowance.
  2. Select Calculate to view the result.
  3. Check the method and assumptions below before using the result.

The method, explained

Blocks per course = ceiling(length/block width); courses = ceiling(height/course height). Multiply and apply allowance.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Using wall length = 8 m, wall height = 1.2 m, exposed block width = 400 mm, exposed course height = 200 mm, waste allowance = 10 %, the result is 132 blocks. Change these example inputs to match your task; use the method above to check each step.

Understanding your result

Counts facing units only. Does not design retaining structures, foundations, reinforcement, drainage, caps or buried courses.

What to keep in mind

Counts facing units only. Does not design retaining structures, foundations, reinforcement, drainage, caps or buried courses. A material-quantity estimate, not a structural design or building-code check. Confirm site measurements, supplier coverage and waste before ordering.

Common questions

How do I use this retaining wall block calculator?

Estimate blocks for a rectangular wall face using exposed block dimensions. Enter wall length in m, wall height in m, exposed block width in mm, exposed course height in mm, waste allowance in %. The starting example is editable; use values for the same system or project.

Which assumptions affect this result?

Counts facing units only. Does not design retaining structures, foundations, reinforcement, drainage, caps or buried courses.
