The method, explained
Your share = rent × [equal fraction/tenants + (1 − equal fraction) × room area/total room area].
For total rent of 2,000, three tenants, a 15 m² room and 40 m² of total private room area, split 50% equally and 50% by room size. Your share is 1,000 ÷ 3 + 1,000 × 15 ÷ 40 = 708.33, rounded to two decimals.
Understanding your result
Enter total private room area, not the whole apartment including shared spaces. A 100% equal share divides rent evenly; 0% allocates it entirely by room area. This is a comparison method for discussion, not a determination of what any tenant owes.
What to keep in mind
A scenario calculation using your inputs, before unlisted fees or taxes. It is not a quoted product rate or personalized recommendation.
Common questions
Should shared rooms count in the room-area total?
Use only the private room areas being compared. The equal-share percentage is how this model accounts for the shared portion of rent.
Can I use square feet instead of square metres?
The calculation uses a ratio, so it gives the same result if both area values use the same unit. Never mix square feet with square metres.
Will rounded shares always add up exactly?
Rounding individual shares may leave a small remainder. Check the total and agree how to allocate the remaining smallest currency unit.
