How to use this tool

  1. Enter numbers.
  2. Select Calculate to view the result.
  3. Check the method and assumptions below before using the result.

The method, explained

Mean = sum of all values ÷ number of values. Median is the middle sorted value, or the average of the two middle values.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

For 2, 3 and 10, the mean is 5, the median is 3 and the sum is 15.

What to keep in mind

Separate values with spaces, commas or semicolons. Use a dot for decimals and do not use thousands separators. Each value has equal weight; this is not a weighted average.

Common questions

Does zero count?

Yes. Zero is a valid observation and is included in the count.

When is the median more useful?

The median is less affected by extreme values. Comparing mean and median can help reveal a skewed set of numbers.
