The method, explained

Represent the value as a coefficient with magnitude at least 1 and below 10, multiplied by an integer power of ten. Round to the chosen significant-digit count. Zero is displayed with exponent zero.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

0.000456 becomes 4.56 × 10^-4 at three significant digits. 999 becomes 1.0 × 10^3 at two significant digits.

What to keep in mind

This formats a numeric value; it does not infer measurement uncertainty or count significant figures in typed trailing zeros. Browser floating-point range and rounding apply.

Common questions

Can I enter E notation?

Yes. For example, 6.02e23 means 6.02 multiplied by 10 to the power 23.

Are the original trailing zeros preserved?

No. Output precision is controlled by your selected significant-digit count.
