The method, explained

Slope = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁). For a nonvertical line, y-intercept = y₁ − slope × x₁.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

From (0, 0) to (3, 4), rise is 4, run is 3, slope is 4/3 and the y-intercept is 0.

What to keep in mind

A vertical line has undefined slope; identical points do not determine a unique line. Coordinates are numerical values on a Cartesian plane, not geographic bearings.

Common questions

Does reversing the points change the slope?

No. Both rise and run change sign, leaving their ratio unchanged.

What is the slope of a horizontal line?

Zero, provided the points have different x coordinates.
