How to use Compress PDF

  1. Choose a supported file and check its preview and size.
  2. Review the options and assumptions shown above.
  3. Process your file, inspect the result, and save your download.

The method, explained

Text-preserving mode rewrites the PDF with compressed object streams. Image-only mode renders pages at 100 dpi and encodes them as JPEG at 65% quality in a new PDF. If the result is larger, keep the original.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Optimize an uncompressed report while retaining selectable text. For a scanned handout, choose image-only mode and compare readability with file size.

What to keep in mind

Up to 20 MB and 50 pages. Optimization may not shrink an already compressed PDF. Image-only mode removes selectable text, links, forms and accessibility tags and reduces image detail. Do not use either mode on digitally signed PDFs: rewriting invalidates signatures.

Common questions

Which mode should I choose?

Start with text-preserving mode. Use image-only mode only when a flattened reading copy is acceptable.

Why is my PDF not smaller?

Many PDFs are already optimized. We report the actual sizes and keep the original available.
