How to use this tool
- Enter shifts: start, end, unpaid break minutes, allow shifts crossing midnight, hourly pay rate, overtime threshold for this period, overtime pay multiplier.
- Select Calculate to view the result.
- Check the method and assumptions below before using the result.
The method, explained
For each shift, subtract start time and unpaid break minutes from end time. Sum paid minutes. Hours above the entered period threshold receive the chosen multiplier; remaining hours receive the base rate.
Using shifts: start, end, unpaid break minutes = 09:00, 17:00, 30 09:00, 17:30, 30, allow shifts crossing midnight = no, hourly pay rate = 20, overtime threshold for this period = 40 hours, overtime pay multiplier = 1.5 ×, the result is 15.5 hours. Change these example inputs to match your task; use the method above to check each step.
What to keep in mind
An editable arithmetic estimate, not payroll compliance advice. Each shift is less than 24 hours. Overnight mode treats an earlier end clock time as the next day. Use consistent currencies, reporting periods and accounting definitions. This arithmetic estimate excludes items not entered in the form.
Common questions
Can I enter a night shift?
Yes. Enable overnight shifts and enter a start such as 22:00 and an end such as 06:00. The end is interpreted as the next day. Equal start and end times are rejected as ambiguous.
Does this automatically apply local overtime law?
No. Enter the threshold and multiplier appropriate to your scenario. Daily overtime, jurisdiction rules and daylight-saving changes require separate handling.
