The method, explained

One byte is 8 bits. Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000: 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. Binary prefixes use powers of 1,024: 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

1 GB equals 1,000 MB and approximately 953.674316 MiB. One MiB equals 1.048576 MB.

What to keep in mind

Some software displays binary quantities with decimal labels. Confirm the actual convention used by the source. Very large results are limited by floating-point precision.

Common questions

Why is a drive’s displayed capacity smaller?

Decimal versus binary units explain part of the difference. Formatting, reserved space and filesystem overhead can reduce usable capacity further.

Does this convert transfer speeds?

No. These are data quantities. A rate also needs a time unit, such as bytes per second.
