How to use this tool
- Enter start time (hh:mm), end time (hh:mm), shift ends, unpaid break (minutes).
- Select Calculate to view the result.
- Check the method and assumptions below before using the result.
The method, explained
Elapsed minutes = end clock time − start clock time, plus 1,440 when the end is on the next day. Subtract the unpaid break and divide by 60 for decimal hours.
09:00 to 17:30 on the same day is 8.5 hours. After a 30-minute unpaid break, net time is 8 hours.
What to keep in mind
For shifts lasting zero through 24 hours. Clock-time arithmetic does not account for daylight-saving changes, time zones, overtime rules or paid-break policies. It is not a payroll compliance calculation.
Common questions
