How to use this tool
- Enter average on completed work (%), completed course weight (%), target overall grade (%).
- Select Calculate to view the result.
- Check the method and assumptions below before using the result.
The method, explained
Required remaining average = (target grade − completed average × completed weight fraction) ÷ remaining weight fraction.
With an 80% average over 60% of the course, reaching 85% overall requires 92.5% on the remaining 40%.
What to keep in mind
Uses a percentage-weighted course model. Completed average must describe only graded work, not an overall grade with missing work counted as zero. Extra credit, dropped assignments, letter grades and instructor rounding are not modeled.
Common questions
What if the answer exceeds 100%?
The target is outside the modeled 0–100% scoring range; the tool flags it instead of capping the result.
Can I use this for the final exam?
Yes, if the final exam is all the remaining course weight. Otherwise the result is the average needed across all remaining work.
