The method, explained

Convert to the base unit, then divide by the target factor. One kilowatt is 1,000 watts; one megawatt is 1,000,000 watts; one milliwatt is 0.001 watt.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

1 kW = 1,000 W; 500 mW = 0.5 W.

What to keep in mind

Power is a rate of energy transfer. A power value alone does not determine energy consumed.

Common questions

Is kW the same as kWh?

No. kW is power, while kWh is energy accumulated over time.

Does this estimate an electricity bill?

No. Billing also needs operating duration, actual load and a tariff.
