The method, explained
Average order value = order revenue ÷ number of orders. Use the same inclusion policy for refunds, tax and shipping across comparisons.
Revenue of 15,000 from 200 orders gives an AOV of 75.
What to keep in mind
Orders are not customers, so repeat purchases count again. This average does not reveal the distribution or profitability of individual orders.
Common questions
Should refunds be subtracted?
Choose a clear net or gross revenue definition and apply it consistently. Net revenue usually reflects relevant refunds.
Is AOV customer lifetime value?
No. AOV measures one average order; lifetime value spans the customer relationship.
