Review the method below for assumptions and conventions.

How to use this converter

  1. Enter file size, file-size unit, connection speed (mbps), usable throughput (%).
  2. Select Calculate to view the result.
  3. Check the method and assumptions below before using the result.

The method, explained

Seconds = file bytes × 8 ÷ (megabits per second × 1,000,000 × usable-throughput fraction). One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; one GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

A 1 GB file over a 100 Mbps connection takes 80 seconds at 100% usable throughput, or 100 seconds at 80%.

What to keep in mind

An estimate for a steady data rate. It excludes startup delays, server limits, compression, changing Wi-Fi quality and pauses. Usable throughput is your assumption, not a measured network speed.

Common questions

Why multiply file size by eight?

Files are measured in bytes while connection speeds usually use bits; one byte contains eight bits.

Does this run a speed test?

No. It sends no test downloads; enter a measured or advertised connection speed yourself.
